FIH Video Umpire Library up and running successfully
Although only a few weeks old, the newly-opened International Hockey Federation’s (FIH) Video Umpire Library has tolled over one hundred thousand video replays.
The project, hosted on Dartfish and supported by the FIH’s Rules and Umpires Committees, is intended to provide umpires as well as the wider international hockey community with a clearer explanation of the way many rules are applied in the modern game.
The library already includes over 130 videos which cover topics ranging from free hits and autopasses to tackles and personal penalty cards. The footage available, collated from dozens of international matches, demonstrates the application of concepts like advantage and game management by some of the top umpires in the world. Each clip is annotated with a synopsis of the video, a quotation of the rules involved, and markers to point out key aspects.
The club strongly encourages its players and umpires to make use of this valuable resource. The videos are free to view, and offer an alternative insight to how or why certain decisions are made during the game of field hockey through a combined visual-text approach. We hope that this important advancement in rules education and awareness is fully appreciated and recommended by our members; any questions that the videos might bring up can be directed to our umpiring coordinator at umpiring@uchockey.co.nz.
